Texas Hill Country Furniture has an unswerving dedication to quality. Our furniture is built to very exacting standards. Although we offer a line of furniture referred to as "rustic", it is in no way crude or lacking of the quality you would expect in your home.

From the first day, a piece receives our undivided attention. Our master craftsman, Juan Alvarez, personally hand picks the logs, sometimes even before the tree is cut. From there they go to our own lumber mill to be cut and milled into boards. After milling, the lumber is placed in a kiln for drying and stays there until the moisture content is reduced to approximately 6-7%. This is a vital part of making fine furniture since woods that are not properly dried will warp and pull apart at the seams.

After the wood is dried, it is run through planers and sanders to size and smooth it. From there it begins the process of becoming a piece of fine furniture while preserving the unique qualities of each board. Every piece of furniture will be totally unique since no two pieces of wood will ever be exactly the same.

All points where the wood is joined together are carefully mortised. When boards are glued to form larger pieces (for tabletops, etc.) they are doweled with 2" wood dowel placed at six inch intervals.

Once the furniture is assembled, the process of finishing begins. When we say our furniture is hand built, that is nowhere truer than in the finishing. All sanding at this stage is done by hand and each coat of finish is carefully applied and sanded again between coats. Each piece has no less than four finish coats and in some instances many more. The various finishes available are:

Hand Rubbed Danish Oil: After repeated applications this results in a deep, lustrous finish seen on fine furniture around the world and brings out the deeper colors of the wood.

Water based urethane: This gives us a beautiful honey gold color in satin or high gloss finish. In addition, it has the advantage of being more environmentally friendly.

Oil based urethane: The oil in this product penetrates deep into the wood and accentuates the beautiful natural colors of the juniper resulting in a deeper, darker color. Available in satin or semi gloss finish.
